New viewers watch the ball and therefore see about four players, which is why the sport looks like chaos punctuated by adverts. Draw a position and watch only that player for a full drive: suddenly the pre-snap movement makes sense and you understand why a guard matters. Twenty-four positions across offence, defence and special teams. At youth level it quietly solves the problem that everybody wants to play the same two positions.
